NEW YORK — Spectrum News NY1 today announced the launch of a new three-hour weeknight lineup, all anchored by award-winning journalist Cheryl Wills. She will lead both “New York Tonight” at 8 p.m. and “NY1 at Ten” at 10 p.m. The new schedule begins today, Monday, January 13. She will also remain the host of the weekly public affairs program "In Focus with Cheryl Wills," where she interviews the most powerful newsmakers and elected officials in New York and beyond.

“Born and raised in New York, Cheryl is a pillar of the community with a loyal audience that has been tuning in to her for years,” said Michael Kurtz, Senior Director of News at Spectrum News NY1. “With her decades of experience at NY1, she is uniquely qualified to deliver New Yorkers the nightly news in this new expanded format on the city’s only 24-hour local news network.”

Wills, who has been with NY1 since its inception in 1992, has been recognized for her journalism numerous times during her career. In addition to several Emmy Awards, she has also received the 2024 Mickey Leland Humanitarian Achievement Award from the National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications; the prestigious Gracie Award from the Alliance for Women in Media; awards from the New York Press Club, the Associated Press, and The United Nations Foundation Prize for a 2015 interview with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Over her career, Wills has interviewed many New Yorkers who have made history, from Norman Hill, a 90-year-old activist who helped organize the 1963 March on Washington alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. to the 17-year-old who made history when she became the youngest Black female to get her pilot’s license in New York state. She also has looked at her own history, reporting on her successful effort to locate and reinter with military honors the remains of her ancestor Sandy Wills, a freed slave who fought in the Civil War.

“This year is my 33rd with New York City's premiere cable news network, Spectrum News NY1,” said Cheryl Wills. “It was an honor to help launch NY1 in 1992 and I remain grateful that I continue to work with such a dedicated team of journalists and editors. The viewers' trust is everything to me, and I promise to continue providing them with insightful and engaging journalism.”

Along with breaking news and weather, “New York Tonight” will give viewers a digest of the day’s most important events and NY1’s best reporting. “NY1 at Ten” will feature recurring segments including the climate change-focused Climate Check, medical news on Daily Dose, inspirational human-interest stories on Last Call and updates on what’s happening in the city at that moment, from public safety to community events.

The programs will air on NY1, which is available to Spectrum subscribers on channel 1, to Altice subscribers in New York City on channel 8, and via the Spectrum News App for mobile, Xumo Stream Box, Roku, and Apple TV streaming devices.
